Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Operations Superintendent of the Electronics Shop, this position maintains and updates all documentation pertaining to the traffic signal system, develops procedures and specifications for implementation of new traffic control products and assists with modifying the existing operation of the traffic signal system.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develops procedures for the integration of new traffic signal control equipment to further develop, optimize and enhance the City’s Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) and assists with the development of standards as required.
  • Performs tests on the ATMS infrastructure, as required, in conjunction with the Electronic Technicians and Traffic Signal Technicians.
  • Inspects, monitors and documents the installation of new traffic signal infrastructure and equipment during and after construction to ensure it meets current specifications.
  • Documents and maintains reports for the preventative maintenance program regarding the condition of the traffic signal system infrastructure using database software. Provides recommendations for replacement and upgrading based on equipment evaluation.
  • Maintains the office and field file system for intersections including controller timings, traffic signal modification forms, site plans, and cabinet schematic drawings.
  • Monitors the downloading of traffic signal timing changes to the field and performs changes to traffic signal controllers in the shop and field as directed.
  • Assists with the development of timing and phasing plans and system coordination implementation for traffic signals through operation of the ATMS software.
  • Performs locates and marks traffic signal utility locations in the field, as requested by the Electronic Shop Foreman.
  • Conducts studies, prepares reports and answers citizen enquiries relating to the operation of the City’s traffic signal system.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience Requirements

  • Graduation from a two-year, post-secondary electronics or transportation engineering technology program.
  • Four years' progressively responsible experience in the field of traffic engineering, with specific emphasis on the design, operation and optimization of traffic signals.
  • Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver's Licence.
  • Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.

 

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of traffic engineering as they relate to the design and operation of modern traffic signal systems.
  • Knowledge of the operation of modern traffic signal equipment and hardware.
  • Ability to prepare and present complex technical reports verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, civic officials, representatives of other agencies and the public.

Weekly Hours: 37.33 

Salary Range: $39.40 to $44.26 CAD per hour (2023 rates)
