This position is a CUPE 859 position and will be filled in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Should it not be filled in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, external candidates will be considered.
Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Supervisor VI (W&S Maintenance), this position is considered as a “working supervisor” assists with will supervising the work of a Water and Sewer Maintenance crew who are responsible for the repair and maintenance of Saskatoon’s water, wastewater, and stormwater collection systems.
Duties & Responsibilities
- As a “working supervisor,” in addition to their water and sewer system maintenance duties, the Supervisor IV will assist with supervision of the assigned staff of a W&S maintenance crew to schedule, train, direct, and evaluated staff in the inspection, operation, and maintenance of W & S Maintenance.
- Ensure that work performed meets documented level of service standards, operational procedures and occupational health and safety procedures.
- Conduct daily safe work plans. Ensure the work is in compliance with specifications. Monitor, document, and track equipment and quantities of material used in the scope of work. Complete daily Foreman Reports when required.
- Assists with establishing preliminary assessments for the construction and maintenance of the water and waste stream systems.
- Identifies problems in design, products, and materials used in operation or construction, and recommends field designs or improvement changes.
- Assists in procurement items such as: parts, material, and equipment need for each job in the preservation and operation of the City's water and sewer systems.
- Ensures that equipment and storage facilities are maintained, kept clean and orderly, and stocked with the necessary supplies.
- Communicates regularly with internal and external stakeholders, and the public as required to schedule and coordinate work.
- Supports and promotes a safe and positive workplace culture through a variety of initiatives and activities.
- Supports and promotes the health and safety of employees and the general public in accordance with the Saskatchewan Employment Act, Saskatchewan Health Regulations and Standards, Occupational Health & Safety Regulations and the City of Saskatoon’s administrative Occupational Health & Safety policies and departmental procedures. Maintains and monitors programs which affect public health and safety.
- Performs the duties of a Water & Sewer System Maintenance and/or Water & Sewer System Equipment Operator as required and deemed competent.
- Performs the duties of a Supervisor VI as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education, Training, and Experience Requirements:
- Secondary (high) school diploma or equivalency certificate.
- Three years directly related, progressively responsible water and sewer maintenance experience.
- Successful completion of or ability to complete successfully a recognized supervisor certification program within six months of obtaining the position.
- Possession of Level 2 Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Operator Certification from the Saskatchewan Operator Certification Board.
- Obtain 3 Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Operator Certification from the Saskatchewan Operator Certification Board. Must be obtained within 12 months of original hire into the position
- Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Drivers License.
- Current drivers abstract from SGI, demonstrating a safe driving record.
- Must comply with all safety related requirements.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
- Demonstrated ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor, lead and encourage staff to develop skills and work towards organization and departmental goals.
- Demonstrated knowledge of, and ability to follow all applicable procedures, policies, legislation, regulations, standards and specifications.
- Demonstrated ability to regularly and consistently attend work to ensure effective operations and service delivery.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the team, the public, contractors and all civic employees.
- Ability to troubleshoot the preservation and operation of the City's water and sewer systems.
- Ability to produce, read and interpret engineering plans and specifications.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
- Ability to operate a computer with word-processing, excel, and other computer applications.
- Knowledge of water, sewer, electrical, gas, telephone and cable television subsurface installations.
- Physical ability to perform all assigned duties.
Additional Requirements
Shift and weekend work is required.
Weekly Hours: 40
Salary Range: $35.92 to $37.37 CAD per hour (2026 rates)
