Job Summary

Under supervision of the Supervisor IV, this position is the first point of contact for customers depositing waste at the Saskatoon Regional Waste Management Centre (Landfill).

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Monitors entrance to the Landfill, enforces compliance with landfill operational procedures.
  • Screens all loads brought to landfill to prevent admission of any potential hazardous substance or prohibited materials.
  • Directs customers to the designated areas for type of refuse being disposed. Provides prompt, courteous and accurate customer service to the public.
  • Weighs materials and assesses necessary fees.
  • Collects disposal fees, issues receipts, provides accurate cash transactions, and balances receipt and cash register at the end of each day.
  • Maintains daily records of loads and contents.
  • Performs clerical duties, including the collection and tabulation of related information and collaborates with the Finance division as required.
  • Maintains scale-house, and immediate area, in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Assists with training of weigh scale operations staff.
  • Troubleshoots and performs routine preventative maintenance on weigh-scales and business software.
  • Performs the duties of a Landfill Attendant or the Supervisor IV as required.
  • Supports and promotes the health and safety of employees and the general public in accordance with the Saskatchewan Employment Act, Saskatchewan Health Regulations and Standards , Occupational Health & Safety Regulations and the City of Saskatoon’s administrative Occupational Health & Safety policies and departmental procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Training And Experience Requirements:

  • Grade 12 education or must obtain GED within 12 months of hire.
  • Six months recent experience as a Landfill Attendant.
  • Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 1A Learner’s Licence, and must obtain 1A Driver’s Licence within 2 attempts.
  • Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid, recognized first aid certificate.
     

Knowledge, Abilities And Skills

  • Knowledge of solid waste operations, particularly disposal and recycling.
  • Knowledge of clerical procedures relating to maintaining records.
  • Knowledge of handling cash, and balancing and completing cash reports.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to deal courteously, tactfully and effectively with the public and civic employees.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to effectively use a computer including point of sale, scale, and Microsoft products.
  • Ability to perform simple arithmetic calculations rapidly and accurately.
  • Skill in the care and use of office and field equipment.
  • Physical ability to perform assigned duties.

Weekly Hours: 40 

Salary Range: $28.05 CAD per hour (2023 rates)
