Job Summary

Under the direction of the Power Electrician and the supervision of the Power Electrician Foreman, this position carries out Apprentice Power Electrician duties on a program basis with the objective of becoming a Journeyman Power Electrician.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Installs, maintains, tests and repairs substation equipment, including transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, DC power supplies, tap changes, protective relaying and other related equipment.
• Installs, maintains and repairs the network system.
• Tests, analyzes and purifies insulating oils for transformers and switches.
• Maintains, tests and repairs distribution transformers, street light fixtures, street light relays and other related equipment.
• Installs, maintains and repairs building or structural wiring and fixtures.
• Installs, maintains and repairs substation grounding and fencing.
• Installs cable splices and terminations on lead-covered cables and solid dielectric cables at various voltage levels.
• Uses and maintains various specialized tools, power tools and general tools pertaining to the trade.
• Uses protective equipment, such as insulated gloves, hoods, blankets and hot line tools, for work on energized equipment.
• Participates in the periodic testing of protective equipment.
• Participates in safety and first aid programs and training programs.
• Performs work according to proper procedures, safety standards, construction standards and other specifications.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Experience and Training Requirements: 
⦁    Grade 12 education, including, Physics 30 and one of the following: Foundations of Mathematics 30, Workplace and Apprenticeship 30 or Pre-Calculus 30 (classes equivalent to the former Math A30/Algebra 20 and C30/Trigonometry 30 will also be recognized). 
⦁    Successful completion of Saskatoon Light & Power Pre-Apprenticeship Skill Assessment. 
⦁    Pre-requisite includes completion of the Saskatoon Light & Power Pre-Apprenticeship term. 
⦁    Following appointment, enrol in, and complete successfully, the Saskatchewan Electrician Apprenticeship Program, receive a Saskatchewan Journeyman Electrician Certificate and complete four years of on-the-job training. 
⦁    Possession of, or ability to successfully complete within 6 months after date of hire, a valid Saskatchewan Class 1A Driver’s Licence. 
⦁    Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.
