Job Summary
Reporting to the Director of Indigenous Initiatives, the Truth and Reconciliation Coordinator is responsible to implement and maintain programs, projects, practices, policies and functions related to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) Calls to Action.
Duties & Responsibilities
Scope And Major Responsibilities
- Collaboratively develops and implement a short and long-term strategic plan for implementing the TRC Calls to Action.
- Builds business relations to increase opportunities for Indigenous businesses, and establish partnerships with Indigenous organizations to identify barriers and risks to be addressed to enhance these opportunities.
- Provides a leadership role in the development of strategic and mutually beneficial relationships with Indigenous groups and stakeholders, and the strategic building of effective partnerships with Indigenous groups, stakeholders and government utilizing traditional Indigenous principles of partnerships.
- Engages with Indigenous partners on a response to community reconciliation and the TRC Calls to Action including implementing a communications strategy.
- Champions, models and implements Indigenous cultural competencies to lift the capacity of the City to achieve excellence with regards to the TRC Calls to Action.
- Promotes TRC Calls to Action, at all levels, by reviewing and developing corporate wide awareness and continuing education programs.
- Coordinates with internal departments on identifying and implementing the TRC Calls to Action as they connect to civic policies and practices, and builds capacity within the organization to ensure affirmation and continued sustainability.
- Develops strategies and activities that support and enhance an inclusive workplace for Indigenous people.
- Mentors and acts in a consultative capacity to Administration on strategy as it relates to the TRC Calls to Action and Indigenous matters.
- Represents the City at conferences, meetings and cultural events and presents educational items related to the TRC Calls to Action, as required.
- Gathers and compiles data related to the City’s participation and role in the TRC’s Calls to Action, and reports out regularly on progress.
- Applies for federal and provincial grants and funds available for the development and promotion of the TRC’s Calls to Action and Indigenous representation.
- Establishes and maintains an appropriate professional network, including other cities, government departments, Indigenous partners and community organizations that provide services for the Indigenous community.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Qualifications
- Degree in Social Sciences, Indigenous Studies, or a related field.
- Seven to nine years’ related and progressively responsible experience working with Indigenous communities.
- Considerable knowledge of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action.
- Considerable knowledge and understanding of Indigenous traditional and contemporary cultures, political structure and history.
- Considerable knowledge of the governance of Indigenous communities and protocols of engagement and relationship building with other levels of government.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders in the Indigenous community and civic staff.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Ability to communicate in an Indigenous language would be an asset.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality while handling sensitive information.
