This position is a CUPE 859 position and will be filled in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Should it not be filled in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, external candidates will be considered.

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Roadways, Fleet & Support Training Supervisor, this position develops, implements and maintains various training programs and manuals related to safe vehicle and equipment operation.  The trainer assumes a leading role in improving operating standards, safe driving habits and operator skills

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conducts classroom instruction and one-on-one practical training of defensive driving practices for 3A and 1A licences
  • Conducts classroom instruction and practical training of heavy trailer towing for SGI “G” endorsement.
  • Conducts classroom instruction and practical training for the operation of a variety of small Power Mobile Equipment.
  • Conducts classroom instruction for Defensive Driver Course, Professional Driver Improvement Course and new driver orientation.
  • Develops training courses, manuals and evaluation documentation for use in classroom, employee orientation, and field instruction related to heavy and light vehicle operation.
  • Develops and implements follow-up audits to assess the effectiveness of formal training programs on driver skill levels and to ensure compliance and due diligence. 
  • Researches and provides recommendations for industry best practices and the use of contracted resources to assist in specialized training for heavy vehicle driving.
  • Participates in training sessions offered by vehicle and equipment factory representatives.
  • Provides one-on-one practical training where operators are experiencing driving problems identified through incident reports.
  • Supports and promotes a safe and positive workplace culture through a variety of initiatives and activities.
  • Supports and promotes the health and safety of employees and the general public in accordance with the Saskatchewan Employment Act, Saskatchewan Health Regulations and Standards, Occupational Health & Safety Regulations and the City of Saskatoon’s administrative Occupational Health & Safety policies and departmental procedures.  Maintains and monitors programs which affect public health and safety.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience Requirements:

  • Grade 12 education.
  • Five years’ experience in the transportation field, including transporting various types of Class 1A loads and equipment and training program development and delivery.
  • Possession of a valid SGI Driver Training Instructor certification for Class 1 and Class 3 Licence and Air Brake Endorsement.
  • Possession of valid Canada Safety Council Professional Driver Improvement Course (PDIC) and Defensive Driver Course (DDC) Instructor certification. Training provided upon hire
  • Possession of valid IVES Forklift Operator and Skid-Steer Operator Instructor certification. Training provided upon hire
  • Possession of Powered Mobile Equipment Safety Evaluator Certification. Training provided upon hire.
  • Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 1A Drivers Licence with no “M” (Automatic) Restriction.
  • Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.
  • Skill in the operation of a computer with word-processing and spreadsheet software (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite) specific to computer programs related to operator training.
  • Successful completion of a recognized “Train the Trainer” and “Basic Training Techniques” program. Training provided upon hire.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

  • Demonstrated ability to regularly and consistently attend work to ensure effective operations and service delivery.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and ability to follow all applicable procedures and policies.  
  • Demonstrated knowledge of provincial labour and safety legislation related to vehicle and equipment operation.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively; orally, including public speaking, and in writing.  
  • Demonstrated ability to design, coordinate and conduct training programs utilizing adult learning techniques, and evaluate the competency of participants.
  • Proficiency in the use of word-processing, database, power point and spreadsheet software.
     

Additional Requirements

Weekly Hours: 40 

Salary Range: $36.56 CAD per hour (2026 rates)
