Job Summary
Reporting to the Traffic Signal Electrician Foreman, this position maintains electrical systems and microprocessor-based controllers including relays, wiring, conflict monitors, signal cables, poles, communication modules, underground conduits and vehicle detectors. Troubleshoots electrical issues as well as working with utility providers to find the best economical ways to power Traffic Signal intersections.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Installs, removes, maintains and repairs traffic signal control equipment and systems.
- Installs, maintains, and removes all traffic signals and associated equipment.
- Inspects and assists for the purpose of familiarization on the installation of Traffic Signal equipment where such installation is being done under contract.
- Inspects installation of underground facilities for traffic signals of work done by contract.
- Maintains and repairs various electrical and electronic equipment, performs duties at various heights using an aerial bucket, ladder or platform.
- Participates in a Standby rotation to provide 24 hours per day, 7 days per week for emergency services.
- Responds to and resolves emergency maintenance issues regarding faulty signal operations.
- Operates auger-equipped digger derrick truck to install pole bases and erect 3 different types of poles including: Cantilever, Combination poles (Combination with utility provider to have street light included) and Corridor poles.
- Sizes and installs electrical circuits including panels, disconnects, fuses, breakers, wire size and type, conduit, protective devices, switches, receptacles and related equipment needed to comply with the CEC(Canadian Electrical Code) and/or NEC(National Electrical Code).
- Designs, prepares, and maintains wiring diagrams and builds electrical systems as required using Varying feeder voltages / locations / method of utilization (Overhead or Underground Service)
- Uses electrical systems to satisfy electrical requirements to install traffic signal at intersection and ensures CEC (Canadian Electrical Code) and local SaskPower/TSASK CEC Interpretations(Supplementary Electrical Codes delegated by SaskPower / TSASK Authority) are met.
- Troubleshoots and isolates faults in electrical and electronic systems and removes and replaces faulty components.
- Directs outside contractors who install all underground work i.e. (junction boxes, poles bases, conduit, pouring concrete cabinet pads and installing electrical service pedestals).
- Supervises electronic Shop temporary helpers and equipment operators assigned to assist with associated duties.
- Performs preventative maintenance on City owned standby power systems by installing and maintaining UPS (Uninterruptible Power System)
- Directs Traffic Signal Technicians with restricted licenses assigned to assist with duties related to electrical work.
- Supervises, and coordinates the work of City employees and contractors related to electrical work, gives technical direction to supervisors and tradespeople engaged in traffic signal electrical installation and/or repair.
- Installs, maintains and repairs electrical distribution systems up to 600 volts. Which provides power to all Traffic Signal intersections and receives incoming electrical feed from the Utility provider (SaskPower or Saskatoon Light and Power depending on location) i.e. overhead or underground supply, various feeder voltages and different physical size limitations based on allowable room for equipment.
- Inspects work being performed by Traffic Signal Technicians with restricted journeyman licenses and apprentices, will need to ensure all work is completed in accordance to the CEC (Canadian Electrical Code) and signs off on their work before a permit is pulled from TSASK.
- Uses, and ensures adherence to proper work procedures, safety standards, construction standards and other specifications.
Qualifications
Education, Experience and Training Requirements:
- Grade 12 education, including Math B30 (Algebra 30), Math C30 (Geo-Trigonometry 30) and Physics 30.
- Possession of a Interprovincial Red Seal Journeyperson Electrician Certificate
- Possession of a Saskatchewan Unrestricted Journeyperson Electrical License
- Possession of, or ability to successfully complete within 6 months after date of hire, a valid Saskatchewan Class 3A Driver’s Licence.
- Possession of or ability to complete and maintain a Digger/Derrick operators certification
- Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.
- Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
- Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.
- Electrical license is tied to the City of Saskatoon as an Electrical Contractor, thus is required to have ability to assess and sign off on work in accordance to the Canadian Electrical Code.
- Possession of or ability to complete Electrical Safety: Arc Flash & Shock program based on the Canadian Standards Association’s.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices related to the installation and repair of traffic signal control equipment and systems.
- Thorough knowledge of construction, repair and maintenance of electrical equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of the CEC (Canadian Electrical Code)
- Thorough knowledge of the Electrical Licensing Act
- Ability to read wiring plans, specifications and blueprints accurately.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to perform duties with minimal supervision.
- Physical ability, including complete colour vision, to perform the assigned duties outside under varying weather conditions.
- Ability to communicate and establish effective working relationships with peers, supervisors, vendors and the general public.
- Ability to operate a digger derrick and bucket truck
Weekly Hours: 37.33
Salary Range: $45.99 CAD per hour (2023 rates)
