Job Summary
Under supervision of the Operations Superintendent, this working supervisor position supervises, and performs
the duties of traffic detours, sign maintenance & installation, and painting programs.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Supervises, trains, directs, evaluates, and performs the duties of staff engaged in Traffic Signing & Painting activities.
- Ensures the efficient use of equipment and materials.
- Ensures work activities are performed in accordance with approved standards, specifications, and activity guidelines, including corporate safety policies and regulations.
- Assists with the development of standards and specifications, as required.
- Assists with the development of a detailed annual work plan and monitors progress of the plan.
- Ensures that the work activities are performed in accordance with the Corporate Safety Policy and Provincial OH&S regulations.
- Maintains comprehensive manual and computerized records of programs and monitors progress daily basis.
- Maintain and keep current all applicable training for sign shop staff as well as seasonal staff.
- Ensures training and work observations adheres to all Occupational Health & Safety regulations.
- Ensures all staff are compliant with our OH&S exemption for detour setting on high-speed roads.
- Works with operations superintendent on training framework and annual review of program and implements change as needed.
- Creates new procedures as applicable, reviews current safe job procedures as per corporate training program.
- Performs new hire and seasonal orientation specific to the sign shop.
- Performs performance competency-based reviews for all staff based on training.
- Ensures that maintenance work is not performed prior to receiving authorization from all utilities.
- Maintains daily work activity logs, training records, and appraisals.
- Evaluates existing signs and pavement markings and makes recommendations as required.
- Reviews and analyzes maintenance activities and makes recommendations for improvement.
- Responds to enquiries and complaints, as required.
- Performs the duties of the Supervisor VI, as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education, Training and Experinece Requirements:
- Grade 12 education.
- 3 years of City operations experience
- Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver's Licence.
- Successful completion of a recognized traffic control course
- Current driver's abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.
- Possession of a valid first aid certificate.
- Successful completion of, or ability to complete successfully, a recognized supervisory certificate.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
- Demonstrated ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor, lead and encourage staff to develop skills and work towards organization and departmental goals.
- Demonstrated knowledge of, and ability to follow all applicable procedures, policies, legislation, regulations, standards and specifications.
- Demonstrated ability to regularly and consistently attend work to ensure effective operations and service delivery.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the team, the public, contractors and all civic employees.
- Considerable knowledge of current methods, technical specifications and work practices related to the position.
- Experience reading, explaining, and facilitating traffic control maps to workers and ensuring comprehension of the traffic control maps.
- Knowledge in the use of equipment, materials and techniques used in the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices
- Ability to read and comprehend engineering drawings as related to sign, detour and pavement marking and streetscaping installations.
- Knowledge of practices and principals involved in the use of traffic control devices.
- Ability to compile and interpret technical data in a comprehensive manner.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
- Physical ability to perform the assigned duties.
- Skill in the care and use of office and field equipment, e.g., desktop or notebook computers and field data loggers.
Additional Requirements
Shift work and weekend work may be involved.
Weekly Hours: 40
Salary Range: $35.22 to $37.01 CAD per hour (2026 rates)
