Job Summary
Under supervision of the Supervisor VI this position supervises, and performs the duties of weigh scale staff at Saskatoon Regional Waste Management Centre (Landfill).
Duties & Responsibilities
- Directs the staffing and scheduling of day-to-day operations relating to the landfill weigh scale.
- Ensures efficient use of staff, equipment and materials through planning and coordination with the Operations Superintendent.
- Reports daily, verbally and in writing, to the Supervisor VI regarding scheduled work, staff, equipment, material used, and daily progress of work performed, including recommendations for improvements.
- Assists with on-site supervision and inspection of fieldwork to ensure quality control of the work and adherence to established safety and environmental procedures and standards.
- Assists with the training and evaluation of staff relating to the landfill.
- Maintains cash floats, orders inventory/supplies, and collaborates with the Business Administration section.
- Troubleshoots and performs routine preventative maintenance for weigh-scales and business software
- Promotes and ensures a safe and positive workplace culture through applying corporate policies and procedures.
- Supports and promotes the health and safety of employees and the general public in accordance with the Saskatchewan Employment Act, Saskatchewan Health Regulations and Standards, Occupational Health & Safety Regulations and the City of Saskatoon’s administrative Occupational Health & Safety policies and departmental procedures. Maintains and monitors programs which affect public health and safety.
- Ensures landfill operational enquiries and complaints from the public are handled appropriately and timely.
- Performs the duties of the Weigh Scale attendant or Supervisor VI as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education, Experience and Training Requirements:
- Grade 12 education.
- Five years’ experience in the operation of municipal solid waste collection and disposal systems
- Successful completion of, or ability to complete successfully, a recognized supervisor certification program within six months of obtaining the position.
- Possession of, or must obtain, the Solid Waste Association of North America certification as a Certified Landfill Manager within 18 months of hire.
- Successful completion of a recognized Supervisor program within a specified period of time.
- Possession of, or must obtain, a valid first aid certificate.
- Possession of a valid Saskatchewan class 1A Driver’s Licence.
- Current Driver’s Abstract, from SGI, demonstrating a safe driving record.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
- Knowledge of the Corporate Safety Policy, collective agreement, letters of understanding, provincial OH&S Regulations, applicable bylaws, safety practices, environmental regulations, procedures and policies, and WHMIS.
- Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of landfill equipment and/or similar heavy and light equipment.
- Knowledge of the weigh scale operation and disposal charges.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, contractors and civic employees.
- Ability to plan, coordinate and supervise the work of assigned staff.
- Ability to participate effectively in a team environment and to adapt to changes in employees, scheduling, procedures and equipment.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Demonstrated leadership competencies.
- Physical ability to perform the assigned duties and to work outside under varying weather conditions
- Skill in the operation of a computer with spreadsheet and database software.

Shift work and weekend work may be required
Weekly Hours: 40
Salary Range: $32.54 to $33.37 CAD per hour (2023 rates)
