This position is a CUPE 47 position and will be filled in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Should it not be filled in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, external candidates will be considered.

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Lab Service Coordinator, this position support implementation quality management system and performs laboratory activities on wastewater, surface water, industrial effluent, and groundwater.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Act as a lead for laboratory sampling and testing program to ensure projects are completed in set deadline.
  • Performs inspection, internal audit, method validation, cause investigation, and helps support the implementation of corrective actions in the lab.
  • Performs analyses of surface water, groundwater, storm sewer, wastewater, industrial effluent, leachate, sludge and biosolids etc.
  • Prepares laboratory solutions such as reagents, media, and standards.
  • Prepares summaries of data for reports including laboratory non-conformity reports and SOP.
  • Performs field tests and environmental sampling for water, wastewater, air, and soil.
  • Performs laboratory staff training, data review, equipment troubleshooting etc.
  • Prepares materials and equipment for analyses, including routine maintenance.
  • Monitors supplies (chemicals, standards, equipment, general lab supplies) for quantity and suitability, orders and receives new inventory following established procurement policies.
  • Cleans laboratory work areas, including labelling, storing, glassware replacement.
  • Assists with directing laboratory staff, as required.
  • Supports activities of the laboratory within Saskatoon Water’s Safety Management System.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
     

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience Requirements:

  • Graduation from a recognized two-year, post-secondary program in Water Resources Engineering Technology, Chemical Technology or Biological Sciences Technology
    OR
    Be a constituent member of the Canadian Council of Technicians and Technologists in the bioscience, chemical or water resources engineering technology field. 
  • 3 Years experience in Saskatoon Water’s Environmental Laboratory and possession of proficiency on all laboratory methodologies.
  • Completion of Supervisor 101 or equivalent City of Saskatoon supervisory training program.
  • Possession of ‘Understanding of ISO/IECO 17025’ and ‘Internal Auditor’ or ‘Non-Conformance’ certificates.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid, recognized first aid certificate.
  • Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver's Licence.
  • Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

  • Proficient in water quality tests such as chloride, hardness, pH, alkalinity, TSS, BOD, chloride, total phosphorous, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, oil & grease, colilert, enterolert etc.
  • Proficient in sampling and sub-sampling methodologies to collect surface water, groundwater, storm sewer, wastewater, industrial effluent, leachate, sludge and biosolids samples.
  • Knowledge of laboratory accreditation and ability to follow operating laboratory procedures to maintain ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.
  • Demonstrated competency in Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Experienced in troubleshooting laboratory equipment such as Spectrophotometer, Flow Injection Analyzer, Discrete Analyzer, Ultrapure Water System, Benchtop units, Field meter, Auto-Sampler, Autoclave, Oven etc.
  • Ability to carry out duties with minimal supervision. Completes work on time and consistent with established standards.
  • Problem solving skills and provide attention to details.
  • Ability to provide support and direction to laboratory staff.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Physical ability to perform the assigned duties.
  • Skill in the operation of a computer to summarize data.

Acceptable current Criminal Record Check (CRC) upon offer of employment.

Additional Requirements

Weekly Hours: 38.75 

Salary Range: $79,802.64  CAD per annum (2023 rates)
