This position is a CUPE 59 position and will be filled in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Should it not be filled in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, external candidates will be considered.

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Parks Technician 14, this position assists with scheduling, organizing, implementing and supervising turf maintenance activities   The position is required to take a working supervisory role in all aspects of turf maintenance in parks and open space. This position assists in the maintenance and monitoring of the health and condition of turf stands.  

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists with developing and implementing turf maintenance schedules to meet approved service levels and procedures.
  • Assists with turf condition assessments, soil testing and related diagnostic activities.
  • Assists with organizing and supervising mowing, aeration, fertilizing, sweeping and turf repairs.
  • Assists with the monitoring of irrigation systems to ensure turf requirements are met.
  • Monitors all areas for weeds and recommends appropriate controls.
  • Monitors and assesses condition of turf areas recommending appropriate maintenance techniques as required.
  • Monitors turf for diseases and insect problems and recommends appropriate controls.
  • Operates all types of turf maintenance equipment and assists assigned staff in proper operating and maintenance techniques.
  • Assists with the supervision and training of assigned staff.
  • Supports and promotes the health and safety of employees and the general public in accordance with the Saskatchewan Employment Act, Saskatchewan Health Regulations and Standards, Occupational Health & Safety Regulations and the City of Saskatoon’s administrative Occupational Health & Safety policies and departmental procedures.  Maintains and monitors programs which affect public health and safety.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience Requirements: 

  • Grade 12 education.Successful completion of three recognized core courses from a recognized horticulture diploma program.
  • Successful completion of one core course in turf maintenance within one year after the date of hire.
  • At least three seasons’ turf operating experience, including experience in mowing, sweeping, aerating, fertilizing and turf repairs.
  • Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver's Licence.
  • Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within three months after date of hire, the appropriate Saskatchewan Pesticide Applicator Permits.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, within one year after date of hire, a valid first aid certificate.

 

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: 

  • Ability to understand and apply horticultural principles, practices and techniques to turf in city parks and open space.
  • Ability to recognize, and recommend programs to control weeds, diseases and insects in turf.
  • Ability to operate and maintain all types of parks turf maintenance equipment and PME.
  • Ability to work with minimal direct supervision.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills.
  • Ability to direct and instruct staff.
  • Ability to interact effectively with the public
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Physical ability to perform the assigned duties in a variety of weather conditions.

Additional Requirements

Shift work and weekend work may be involved.

Weekly Hours: 40 

Salary Range: $28.12 to $31.01 CAD per hour (2026 rates)
