Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Parks Supervisor, this position performs a variety of technical, operational, supervisory and administrative tasks related to the grounds maintenance program.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Supervises, trains, directs, schedules, and evaluates assigned staff, including completion of annual performance reviews.
- Ensures that various inspection reports, incident investigation reports, Time and Attendance reports, maintenance activity tracking reports, etc. are completed in a timely and accurate manner.
- Assists with the procurement and delivery of operational materials and supplies to field staff.
- Operates, schedules and conducts minor repairs on semi and manual irrigation systems.
- Assists with the review and revision of operational documentation, i.e. internal orders, maintenance routes, inventories, etc., and assists with reviews of new park designs and inspections of parks under construction.
- Assists with the resolution of public and outside interest groups operational concerns and coordinates required activities.
- Assists with the development of processes, policies, standards and specifications.
- Supports and promotes the health and safety of employees and the general public in accordance with the Saskatchewan Employment Act, Saskatchewan Health Regulations and Standards, Occupational Health & Safety Regulations and the City of Saskatoon’s administrative Occupational Health & Safety policies and departmental procedures. Maintains and monitors programs which affect public health and safety.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education, Training & Experience Requirements:
- Grade 12 education.
- Successful completion of a diploma in horticulture.
- Three years’ progressively responsible experience in grounds maintenance or related field, including one year supervising staff.
- Successful completion of, or ability to successfully complete, recognized supervisory courses.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within three months after hire, all relevant Saskatchewan Pesticide Applicator Permits.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, within one year after date of hire, a valid first aid certificate.
- Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver's Licence.
- Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
- Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance of parks equipment and irrigation systems.
- Considerable knowledge of horticultural practices pertaining to turf management, pests, diseases, and floral and arboricultural maintenance.
- Ability to read and interpret landscape construction drawings.
- Knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations as they pertain to the Parks Division.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise, direct train, develop and assess staff.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, assigned staff and the public.
- Skill in the use of a computer with word-processing, spreadsheet and database software
- Physical ability to perform the assigned duties, including outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
Additional Requirements
Shift work and weekend work may be involved.
Weekly Hours: 40
Salary Range: $34.78 to $38.35 CAD per hour (2026 rates)
