Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Parks Supervisor (urban forestry), this position performs a variety of technical, operational, supervisory and administrative tasks related to urban forestry.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Supervises, trains, directs, schedules, and evaluates, including completion of annual performance reviews, assigned staff.
- Ensures that various inspection reports, daily reports, time sheets, leave report forms, staff injury investigation reports, vehicle and equipment accident reports, etc. are completed in a timely and accurate manner.
- Coordinates the annual Community Tree Planting Program (CTPP) and tree watering program.
- Coordinates relocation of city owned trees impacted by construction projects. Acts as a urban forestry liaison on construction projects.
- Assists with the annual tree tender.
- Assists with contracted tree work inspections to ensure adherence to City construction standards and specifications.
- Maintains records related to urban forestry operations; i.e. computerized tree inventory, job number systems, etc.
- Assists with the updating and maintenance of the tree inventory utilizing GPS technology.
- Assists with the development of processes, policies, standards and specifications.
- Supports and promotes a safe and positive workplace culture through a variety of initiatives and activities.
- Supports and promotes the health and safety of employees in accordance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act & Regulations in addition to the City of Saskatoon’s Administrative Occupational Health & Safety Policies and departmental procedures.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Grade 12 education.
- Successful completion of a recognized diploma in horticulture, including a core course in arboriculture or urban forestry.
- Possession of a Certified Arborist designation from the International Society of Arboriculture.
- Three years’ progressively responsible experience in arboriculture, including one year supervising staff.
- Successful completion of, or ability to successfully complete, recognized supervisory courses.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within three months after hire, all relevant Saskatchewan Pesticide Applicator Permits.
- Possession of or ability to obtain within six months after date of hire, a valid first aid certificate.
- Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver's Licence.
- Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.
- Considerable knowledge of arboriculture principles, practices and techniques.
- Knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations as they pertain to the Parks Division.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise, direct train, develop and assess staff.
- Ability to interpret landscape plans, as-built drawings and maps.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, assigned staff and the public.
- Skill in the use of a computer with word-processing, spreadsheet and database software
- Physical ability to perform the assigned duties, including outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
Additional Requirements
Hours Of Work:
- Shift work and weekend work may be involved.
- Stand-by is mandatory for designated employees when operationally required. The employee must report to work immediately and be fit for duty
Weekly Hours: 40
Salary Range: $33.94 to $37.42 CAD per hour (2025 rates)
