Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Irrigation Supervisor, this position performs a variety of technical, operational, supervisory and administrative tasks related to the irrigation program.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Supervises, trains, directs, schedules, and evaluates, including completion of annual performance reviews, assigned staff.
- Ensures that various inspection reports, daily reports, time sheets, irrigation problem report forms , safety investigation reports, vehicle and equipment accident reports, etc. are completed in a timely and accurate manner.
- Assists with the evaluation of operations related to water conservation initiatives such as conducting regular checks of the automatic irrigation management system (AIMS) central computer programs.
- Assists with the inspection of construction projects to ensure adherence to City’s construction standards and specifications.
- Read and interpret construction drawings as it pertains to new installations, upgrades and maintenance operations.
- Assists with the resolution of public and outside interest groups operational concerns and coordinates required activities.
- Assists with the development of processes, standards and technical specifications for irrigation practices.
- Supports and promotes a safe and positive workplace culture through a variety of initiatives and activities.
- Supports and promotes the health and safety of employees in accordance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act & Regulations in addition to the City of Saskatoon’s Administrative Occupational Health & Safety Policies and departmental procedures.
- Performs troubleshooting of central control systems, and supports electricians where required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education, Training & Experience Requirements:
⦁ Grade 12 education.
⦁ Successful completion of a diploma in horticulture specializing in Turf Management including three irrigation courses, non-agriculture (e.g. Landscape Irrigation Technician Course).
⦁ Possession of or ability within six months after date of hire, Backflow Prevention Certificate.
⦁ Possession of or ability within six months after date of hire, Electro and Butt Fusion Certificate.
⦁ Three years’ progressively responsible experience in servicing and installing irrigation systems, including one year supervising staff.
⦁ Successful completion of, or ability to successfully complete, recognized supervisory courses.
⦁ Possession of or ability to obtain within six months after date of hire, a valid first aid certificate.
⦁ Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver's Licence.
⦁ Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.
Knowledge, Abilities & Skills:
⦁ Considerable knowledge of standard methods, materials and tools used in commercial irrigation systems, including identifying and eliminating cross-connection hazards, troubleshooting controllers, electric valves and field wiring.
⦁ Considerable knowledge of turf and water relationships, including the ability to perform calculations for controller scheduling through the AIMS central computer.
⦁ Knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations as they pertain to the Parks Department vision. .
⦁ Demonstrated ability to supervise, direct train, develop and assess staff.
⦁ Ability to read and interpret blueprints for the installation, maintenance or upgrade of irrigation systems.
⦁ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, assigned staff and the public.
⦁ Ability to have basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office, City email and Fusion. Physical ability to perform the assigned duties, including outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
Additional Requirements
- Shift work and weekend work may be involved.
- Stand-by is mandatory for designated employees when operationally required. The employee must report to work immediately and be fit for duty
Weekly Hours: 40
Salary Range: $34.78 to $38.35 CAD per hour (2026 rates)
