This position is a CUPE 59 position and will be filled in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Should it not be filled in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, external candidates will be considered.

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Program Design Consultant, this position focuses on engaging citizens, particularly those who are inactive or new to physical exercise, with the primary objective of promoting regular physical activity among the residents of Saskatoon. Responsibilities include the planning and design of fitness programs, overseeing and evaluating the implementation of these programs, and assessing the program space, equipment, and overall layout of the facilities utilized for this purpose.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develops program plans for fitness activities.
  • Directs the delivery of fitness activities for the target group.
  • Assesses fitness needs of citizens, trends in the industry. Analyzes and interprets this information to develop physical activity programs.
  • Monitors the quality of the activities delivered by the Recreation and Community Development or co-sponsored with other organizations/agencies.
  • Prepares and monitors program data used to prepare program evaluation reports, as assigned.
  • Selects, schedules, trains, guides, and develops fitness instructors, weight room attendants and personal trainers , as well asmonitors and assesses their performance.
  • Fosters partnerships with organizations to promote and support entry level fitness programs.
  • Participates in orientation and in-service training programs.
  • Researches, and applies for, grants applicable to physical fitness programming, as assigned.
  • Works with site teams to ensures program space is set up and has the proper equipment and proper layout for fitness activities.
  • In collaboration with site staff reviews condition of fitness equipment, develops a plan to for replacement including developing a yearly list and budget for replacement.  Assists with the  development of tender specifications for replacement of equipment.
  • Assists with promoting the benefits of active living by means of trade shows, presentations, etc.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience Requirements:

  • Degree in physical education, specializing in exercise science, or a degree in kinesiology.
  • Three years' related experience in the design, delivery and supervision of physical fitness programs for adults.
  • Possession of a valid, recognized standard CPR certificate.
  • Certification, or ability to recertify within six months after date of hire, as a Certified Exercise Physiologist (CEP) from the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology (CSEP).

 

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

  • Knowledge of exercise physiology areas involving adherence to, compliance with and the stages of change in physical activity.
  • Knowledge of human anatomy and biomechanics.
  • Knowledge of the role community recreation plays in the continuum of health.
  • Knowledge of the theory and philosophy of recreation program planning.
  • Knowledge of current literature, standards, quality control evaluation methods and practises applicable to fitness programming.
  • Ability to establish a good rapport with the target group.
  • Ability to identify trends and to maintain, improve or replace existing fitness programs to meet the needs ofthe public
  • Ability to conduct fitness assessments, analyze and interpret results and to develop fitness activities to meet the needs.
  • Ability to record, and make recommendations on progress pertaining to, each participant's exercise program.
  • Ability to analyze and adapt the fitness activity to meet the needs of the public.
  • Ability to express ideas and concepts effectively orally and in writing to staff and the public.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff, peers, supervisor, volunteers and the public.
  • Demonstrated leadership skill in program planning, including design, delivery and evaluation of physical fitness activities for adults.
  • Demonstrated creative skill, including generating program ideas, implementing new programs, risk-taking, networking and collaboration with others to deliver fitness programs.

Requires Security Check

Acceptable current Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Vulnerable Sector Search (VSS) upon offer of employment.

Additional Requirements

Shift work and weekend work are involved. 

Weekly Hours: 40 

Salary Range: $69,591.12 to $76,725.12 CAD per annum (2026 rates)
