This position is a CUPE 59 position and will be filled in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Should it not be filled in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, external candidates will be considered.
Job Summary
Under supervision of the Site Administrator, this position designs and directs the delivery of specialized physical fitness activities for adults diagnosed with medical concerns.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Develops activity plans for specialized physical fitness activities for adults diagnosed with medical concerns in accordance with the standards adopted by the City of Saskatoon and Saskatoon Health Region.
- Directs the delivery of specialized activities for the client group.
- Monitors the quality of the activities delivered by the Leisure Services or co-sponsored with Saskatoon Health Region.
- Prepares and monitors program data used to prepare program evaluation reports, as assigned.
- Selects, schedules, guides, develops fitness instructors and monitors and assesses their performance.
- Fosters partnerships with Saskatoon Health Region organizations to promote and support specialized fitness programs.
- Acts as liaison with district health-care professionals in the design and delivery of specialized exercise programs and requests assistance from the supervisor in areas that are unresolved.
- Participates in orientation and in-service training programs.
- Researches, and apply for, grants applicable to specialized physical fitness programming, as assigned.
- Ensures program space is ready for the fitness activities.
- Assists with promoting the benefits of active living by means of trade shows, presentations, etc.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education, Training and Experience Requirements
- Degree in physical education, specializing in exercise science, or a degree in kinesiology.
- Three years' related experience in the design, delivery and supervision of specialized physical fitness programs for adults with medical concerns.
- Possession of a valid, recognized standard CPR certificate.
- Certification, or ability to recertify within six months after date of hire, as a Certified Exercise Physiologist (CEP) from the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology (CSEP).
- Possession of the American College Sports Medicine Exercise Specialist Certificate would be an asset.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
- Knowledge of human anatomy, exercise physiology, bio-mechanics and pathophysiology.
- Knowledge of the role community recreation plays in the continuum of health.
- Knowledge of the theory and philosophy of recreation program planning.
- Knowledge of current literature, standards, quality control evaluation methods and practises applicable to fitness programming.
- Ability to understand the effects of medication on the exercise prescription.
- Ability to identify trends and to maintain, improve or replace existing fitness programs to meet the needs of adults with medical concerns.
- Ability to conduct fitness assessments, analyse and interpret results and to develop fitness activities to meet the medical concerns.
- Ability to record, and make recommendations on progress pertaining to, each client's exercise program.
- Ability to analyse and adapt the fitness activity to meet the needs of adults with specific medical concerns.
- Ability to express ideas and concepts effectively orally and in writing to staff and public.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff, peers, supervisor, volunteers and the public and to work with an interdisciplinary team of affiliated health professionals.
- Demonstrated leadership skill in program planning, including design, delivery and evaluation of specialized physical fitness activities for adults with medical disorders and in working with people, including giving direction, team building and training of staff and volunteers.
- Demonstrated creative skill, including generating program ideas, implementing new programs, risk taking, networking and collaboration with others to deliver fitness programs.

Weekly Hours: 40
Salary Range: $69,591.12 to $76,725.12 CAD per annum (2026 rates)
