This position is a IAFF 80 position and will be filled in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Should it not be filled in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, external candidates will be considered.
Job Summary
Under supervision of the Assistant Chief, Staff Development and Safety, this position is responsible performing functions and duties related to the planning, development, delivery and evaluation of training and certification. This positions primary focus will be related to activities in the area of Officer and Supervisor Development; however, will assist in other areas as required.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Plans, develops, coordinates, facilitates, and evaluates the delivery of Officer Development training within the department.
- Researches and assesses emerging industry trends to ensure training materials remain current, relevant, and aligned with the operational needs of the Saskatoon Fire Department and supports the incorporation of these insights into training curriculum and lesson plans.
- Collaborates with Officers and Supervisors to strengthen leadership approaches to improve overall departmental effectiveness.
- Ensures that all training functions are conducted safely and efficiently in conformance with the Department Safety Policy, Department Work Standards, applicable NFPA Standards and applicable Acts, Regulations or adopted governance.
- Assists in maintaining equipment and learning aids; performs necessary duties to set up, inspect, test, and return to service all equipment and technical training devices used for classes and learning activities.
- Formats training lessons and curriculum into Learning Management System.
- Oversees specialized projects and collaborates with SFD employees on behalf of the department.
- Provides and prepares reports, and other required documentation, for review by the Assistant Chief.
- Provides training and education to specified members of the public.
- Assists with the development of evaluation instruments as required to ensure validity and reliability.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education, Training and Experience Requirements
- Possession of the following certifications:
- Fire Services Instructor Level I (NFPA 1041), IFSAC and/or ProBoard accredited.
- Fire Officer Level II (NFPA 1021), IFSAC and/or ProBoard accredited.
- Must attain Fire Service Instructor Level II (NFPA 1041), IFSAC and/or ProBoard accredited, within one year of accepting this position.
- Must attain Incident Safety Officer (NFPA 1521), IFSAC and/or ProBoard accredited, within one year of accepting this position.
- Completion of, and certification from, a recognized extension program in Adult Education would be an asset.
- Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
- Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
- Knowledge of current strategies and tactics utilized by the Saskatoon Fire Department.
- Knowledge of current adult education development instructional methodologies.
- Knowledge of Fire Department policies and procedures.
- Considerable knowledge of Fire Department functions and responsibilities.
- Ability to prepare reports and correspondence.
- Ability to adapt to changing technology.
- Demonstrated ability in the design and delivery of training and development programs.
- Demonstrated ability in the application of effective and appropriate leadership and management techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to develop positive working relationships with internal and external agencies and individuals.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in written form through reports and correspondence.
- Demonstrated skill in the use of a computer for editing documents (Microsoft Word) and data input (Microsoft, SharePoint, Outlook, Excel and Vector Solutions).
Weekly Hours: 37.5
Salary Range: $136,158.72 to $139,506.96 CAD per annum (2023 rates)
