Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Facilities Superintendent, this position involves skilled instrumentation and controls work in the installation, monitoring, maintenance and repair of all aspects of Building Control systems and equipment.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Installs, maintains, monitors and repairs a wide variety of control systems and equipment, including BMS, HVAC, electrical and energy/water use monitoring. Carries out maintenance and repair of compressed air system and pneumatic instruments and pumps. Checks calibration and repairs electric and electronic instruments.
- Develops, performs and maintains a preventative maintenance program, cleaning, repair and replacement of parts. Determines maintenance schedules for new and existing equipment.
- Assists the Facilities Superintendent with budgeting and planning for controls systems upgrades.
- Diagnose and repairs complex control system malfunctions requiring extensive knowledge of a variety of electronic or digital controls systems and ability to test and write modifications in multiple languages of systems software.
- Provides solutions to very complex control system problems by either troubleshooting the system, or advising others on how to resolve problems. Testing and commissioning of BMS and HVAC controls systems and electronics.
- Prepares sketches for as-built drawings and discrepancies for engineering corrections and drawings. In conjunction with electrical consultants, reviews, and recommends changes to blueprints and specifications for a variety of projects. Designs modifications and installations in existing facilities.
- Coordinates, supervises and inspects the work of onsite trades people and contractors. Conducts project evaluations to ensure compliance with installation standards.
- Supports and promotes a safe and positive workplace culture through a variety of initiatives and activities. Ensures adherence to proper safety procedures and use of proper protective equipment.
- Supports and promotes the health and safety of employees and the general public in accordance with the National Building Code of Canada , Canadian Electrical Code, Saskatchewan Employment Act, Saskatchewan Health Regulations and Standards , Occupational Health & Safety Regulations and the City of Saskatoon’s administrative Occupational Health & Safety policies and departmental procedures. Maintains and monitors programs which affect public health and safety.
- Prepares material and labour cost estimates for projects and maintenance budget, including researching, monitoring and initiating purchase requisitions. Orders, expedites and purchases required supplies. Initiates and completes work orders.
- Provides instruction and training in instrument, controls techniques, writes Process Narratives, as required. Coordinates work with other civic trades.
- Supports efforts to reduce energy and water consumption and maintenance costs through retro-commissioning of equipment, energy and water monitoring, training building operations staff, and proactively looking for process and productivity improvements.
- Performs other related duties, including non-trade duties, as assigned.
Qualifications
Education, Training And Experience Requirements
- Must possess a two-year, post-secondary engineering technology diploma (or equivalent) from a program recognized by the Saskatchewan Applied Science Technologists and Technicians (SASTT)
- Certification, or eligibility for certification, as an Applied Science Technologist with the Saskatchewan Applied Science Technologists and Technicians.
- Five years’ current experience in industrial controls instrumentation, maintenance and repair.
- Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Journeyman Electrician Certificate would be an asset.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within six months after date of hire, a valid Fireman’s Certificate.
- Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
- Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid first aid certificate.
- Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with other employees and the public.
Knowledge, Abilities And Skills
- Knowledge of the operation of pneumatic controls systems, and direct experience in the operation of electrical and electronic controls, fire alarms and emergency power systems.
- Knowledge of installation and maintenance of low voltage industrial equipment.
- Knowledge of standard methods, materials, tools and equipment of the electrical trade.
- Knowledge of direct digital control systems.
- Ability to interpret blueprints, plans and specifications.
- Ability to plan and organize work, to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

Salary Range: $35.83 to $39.51 CAD per hour (2023 rates)
