Job Summary

This position is responsible for the effective management of one of four operational units and effective management and control of emergency operations.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manages assigned staff, assigns work schedules, assesses staffing needs, identifies and pursues other resources if necessary. Conducts performance management and, when required, disciplinary action.
  • Responds to emergencies and manages incidents as required.
  • Ensures completion of and reviews all documentation related to emergency incidents, personnel requests, and records.
  • Ensures all activities of the Battalion are conducted in accordance with Department policies, operating guidelines, rules and regulations.
  • Ensures the training requirements of assigned staff to meet the Department's training standards and operational effectiveness, adhering to the annual training calendar and weekly training schedule. Participates actively in battalion training programs and, in conjunction with the Training Division, evaluates the operational effectiveness of battalion staff and training initiatives.
  • Ensures that operational problems are identified and works actively to achieve positive resolutions to these problems.
  • Ensures all battalion fire inspections, pre-incident plans and property maintenance inspections are completed in accordance with Department standards.
  • Ensures that performance appraisals of assigned staff are completed.
  • Ensures that battalion staff receives information, directives, policies, operating guidelines and changes related to day-to-day business on a regular basis.
  • Assists with the planning, preparation, review and implementation of the annual capital and operating budgets for the Department.
  • Represents the Department at community events or community association and business improvement district meetings, as required.
  • Ensures liaison between the battalion and the Community Relations Division for Department-endorsed public relations initiatives.
  • Works as part of the Management and joint Labour/Management Committees and attends Management Team meetings, as required. Contributes to the management of Department programs and initiatives.
  • Provides media releases pertaining to emergency incidents, as required.
  • Assumes the duties of Deputy Chief or either Assistant Chief, as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Degree in commerce, business administration or a related field.
  • Four to six years’ experience managing complex emergency situations including supervisory experience as a Fire Officer.
  • Graduation from, or current participation in, Dalhousie University Certificate in Fire Service Administration, or related Fire Service Management Certificate programs would be an asset.
  • Experience in fire prevention, fire inspection, training would be considered an asset
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Holds the rank of Lieutenant or Captain (IFSAC certification Fire Officer Level II NFPA 1021 or equivalent of current confirmed Company Officer).
  • Participation in the Department’s Chief Officer Development Program.
  • Knowledge of supervisory and management principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of Department functions and responsibilities, including training and staff development.
  • Knowledge of City of Saskatoon Fire and Protective Services Bylaw 7990, Property Maintenance and Nuisance Abatement Bylaw 8175, and the Saskatchewan Fire Safety Act and other pertinent provincial legislation and bylaws.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with assigned staff, representatives of other agencies and the public.

Acceptable current Criminal Record Check (CRC) and Vulnerable Sector Search (VSS) upon offer of employment.

Weekly Hours: 40 

Salary Range: $155,360.43 to $182,551.68 CAD per annum (2026 rates)
