Job Summary
Under supervision of the Supervisor X and with direction and guidance from Certified Journeypersons, this position will assist with maintenance and repair of a variety of vehicles and equipment.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Performs repairs and preventative maintenance on a variety of vehicles and equipment.
- Assists with the inspection of vehicles and equipment, including road tests where necessary, and tests various systems and components to determine specific problems.
- Adjusts, repairs and replaces parts and components of vehicles and equipment using hand tools and other specialized equipment.
- Tests and adjusts repaired systems to manufacturer's performance specifications.
- Assists with the diagnoses and repair of a wide variety of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems and associated components.
- Assists with minor fabrication and welding duties as required.
- Participates in on-the-job training as required to ensure that work is performed in an efficient and safe manner.
- Completes required documentation such as inspection forms, service reports, etc.
- Supports the health and safety of employees and the general public in accordance with the Saskatchewan Employment Act and the City of Saskatoon’s administrative Occupational Health & Safety policies and departmental procedures.
- Adheres to the City of Saskatoon’s Code of Conduct and all applicable policies.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education, Training and Experience Requirements
- Grade 12 education, including math courses consistent with post-secondary entrance requirements. (Foundations of Math 20 or Pre-Calculus 20, and an English Language Requirement).
- Following appointment, enroll in and complete successfully, Post-secondary Truck and Transport Mechanic or Heavy Equipment Mechanic Program.
- Possession of a valid Saskatchewan Class 5 Driver's Licence.
- Class 1A or 3A would be an asset and will be a future requirement to obtain during the apprenticeship. (This training may be supplied by the City).
- Current driver’s abstract from SGI demonstrating a safe driving record.
- Completion of registered pre-apprenticeship training in Truck and Transport or Heavy Duty Mechanic, or the ability to successfully pass pre-employment aptitude testing.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
- Basic knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
- Basic knowledge of electronic engines, transmissions, hydraulics, air/hydraulic brakes and other on-board vehicle systems.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision, individually or as a team member.
- Ability to comprehend technical service manuals and bulletins.
- Ability to process and complete all required forms and reports.
- Basic general computer skills.
Additional Requirements
- Apprentices must supply their own tools
- Shift work will be included
Weekly Hours: 40
Salary Range: $67,628.88 to $79,563.36 CAD per annum (2026 rates)
